NOTICE: To fill vacancies on the State Historical Resources Commission

The State Office of Historic Preservation in the Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking to fill six vacancies on the State Historical Resources Commission.  The vacant positions are for the disciplines in History, Architectural History, Prehistoric Archaeology, Historic Archaeology, Folklife, and Ethnic History.

All candidates should be interested in the identification and preservation of California's cultural heritage.  The positions for historians and archaeologist shall be recognized professionals who meet federal qualifications standards and experience, while the positions for folklorist and ethnic historian must demonstrate knowledge and interests in folklife and ethnic history.  The primary responsibility of the Commission is to evaluate and recommend significant cultural resources for listing in state and federal historical registration programs.  The Commission is a nine-member public body appointed by the Governor in consultation with the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation and the State Historic Preservation Officer.  The State Parks Director approves properties for the state registry programs.  The State Historic Preservation Officer serves as Executive Secretary to the Commission.  The Commission meets on two consecutive days four times a year.  Commission members receive $100 per day plus expenses.

Tule Lake, Manzanar, Harada House, Nippon Hospital, and the Temporary Detention Centers are just a few of the properties approved by the Commission.  Additional properties important to the Nikkei community will be considered by the Commission in the future.
